Scaffolding has been one of the key parts of the construction and building work for thousands years. If you look at pictures of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, you will see an early version of scaffolding systems that help build one of the most magnificent structures in our world.
There is even evidence of Scaffolding used in China, South America, ancient Rome and Greece during the times when ancient wonders were built.
What is Scaffolding?
This used to be no more than logs lashed with a hemp, rope or cloth or hammered with nails together to create “skeletons” that would later be lapped with timber boards for painters, metalsmiths, stonemasons and even artists who needed a platform for their performance.
Nowadays, this is a temporary structure that is used as working platforms or to provide access to these platforms. These are often used in construction works so that workers can have a stable, safe platform when work can’t be done on the floor or at a ground level. Scaffolding is everything including tubes, frames, couplers and other materials that when assembled become a scaffold.
This work is erecting, dismantling or altering a temporary structure built to support a platform. This work should be done by a professional holding a proper class of high-risk work license.
Why Do You Need a Scaffold?
It’s quite challenging to maintain high access buildings and structures since they are often located at great heights and it’s impossible to access those points from the ground level. Therefore, it can become a disturbing and tedious task without the help of proper techniques. But if you have scaffold platforms, you can easily and safely handle such difficult tasks.
Some could think that with so many different kinds of ladders available in the market that can reach high areas, there is no need for temporary platforms.
But if you could answer the following simple questions, your doubt will get clear:
- Do you need to move the ladder often, like several times per hour?
- Do you need to move heavy equipment or materials up and down?
- Is your job nature not comfortable or safe for ladder use?
If you answered “Yes” to these questions, it’s evident you need a scaffolding and should consider renting it at the earliest so that you perform your tasks in the most seamless and convenient manner.
Reasons for using scaffolding in construction and building works
If you want to render the protection measures and industrial standards, scaffolding is going to become one of the most reliable and efficient ones. It keeps people involved in risky building projects protected and safe from possible risks and accidents.
Often workers find themselves in a situation when they can’t reach some positions or areas without a help of scaffolding platforms. That is what makes this system so popular. This is very easy to set up and much easier to move from one place to another. Since it’s a free standing system that doesn’t require any additional support or help, it’s perfect for the building maintenance programs and construction sites. Not to mention the convenience to carry out risky projects without fear and absolute flexibility and freedom of movement.
Even though many industries use scaffolding, these are the main areas where this outstanding system is incorporated more often:
- Inspection and examining
- Repairing and maintenance of buildings
- Window cleaning or any high-end cleaning
- Civil engineering
All these industries use this to reach for those points that are impossible to reach otherwise without compromising safety. With scaffolding, workers can carry out tasks efficiently and quickly at a minimal cost possible.

The main parts
Scaffolding is made of different parts, each of them is used to ensure a safe, strong and reliable connection between scaffold tubes. The main components are couplers, scaffold boards, and scaffold tubes.
Scaffold tubes (also called pipes) are manufactured of either aluminum or steel. Aluminum tubes are lighter but are often not as strong as steel tubes, thus steel ones are better for heavy-duty usage. Aluminum is perfect for low-level, light and non-weight bearing usage.
Other components, such as couples and boards, are made from pressed or drop-forged steel. These materials are perfect for creating durable parts. When installed properly by specialists, they are capable of handling a very high workload.
Transoms, ledgers, and standards
When it comes to the basic structure of scaffoldings, the most common components are the ledgers (horizontal poles), the standards (vertical poles that bear the weight), and the transoms (they are attached to ledgers and provide support to the boards). It’s not recommended to mix tubing and couplers of different diameters and strengths unless the manufacturer has designed the couplers for this purpose. For example, don’t mix steel and aluminum parts because it can reduce the strength of the entire construction.
How to ensure safety when working on a scaffold
Ensure that you rented this from a reliable company and have it properly grounded. This is the only way to make sure it can sufficiently support the structure. You want your workers to have a complete piece of mind so you need to be sure everything is checked all over the scaffolding and make sure that all nuts and bolts are tightened up properly. Don’t automatically assume that the scaffold foundation is safe because heavy work can cause deterioration.
It’s recommended that you always put on a hard hat while using scaffolding. Just imagine that all construction debris and tools could fall on you, however, somebody may smash something off a higher floor. You want to stay safe and make sure you remove the hard hat only when you are away from the site. You should also use site-approved shoes that will prevent you from slipping on wet patches.
Don’t climb a scaffold quickly. You can slip upon a wet watch or something could fall from above. Nothing is worth the risk.
Don’t forget that every scaffold has a load bearing capacity. This is one of the key aspects that you need to follow in order to avoid accidents. Don’t overload the scaffold or put anything heavy on it as it will add to the total load. It can be tempting to think that two extra kilograms will not create a difference. But you can be shocked to know that this is the different between an accident and safety.
Note that you should also adhere to safety guidelines that are about working near electricity lines. The scaffold shouldn’t be exposed to these lines or moved with minimum clearance. At all ties, ensure you have somebody with you who can take care of clearance so that everything stays safe. Electrocutions can happen within seconds, so follow all safety guidelines concerning to overhead power lines.
There are 60 scaffolding deaths happen every year, and 30% of them are due to electrocutions. Don’t let this happen and never try to place scaffolds near the lines.
If you are not a professional worker, consult a specialist before shifting the scaffold and don’t underestimate safety in these kinds of jobs.
